As the design and heritage architects, we were responsible for the design, documentation and administration of the Holiday Inn project located in the heart of Darling Harbour, directly opposite the Sydney Entertainment Centre. This involved designing and constructing a compatible 3-storey roof addition to the heritage listed former John Bridge Warehouse, constructed in 1890, that would enhance the heritage facade.
The design concept to create a lightweight, seemingly translucent, contemporary infill atop the heritage building was successfully achieved by providing a subservient and sympathetic form to subtly balance and actively contribute to the streetscape.
The client’s expectations, design brief, budget and timeframe as well as strict heritage and council requirements were all met whilst respecting and reinforcing the heritage significance of the existing building and the streetscape. |
